when did you made/started this Slut Sisters Unity? Alma: I came up with the name and idea of SSU many years ago (maybe in 1999) with my sister Pörri. We were talking about feminism and riot grrl stuff, and thought that there wasn´t enough action in that area in Finland. So we wanted to start something together. what is it?Tell me about this Unity? Alma: Basically Slut Sisters Unity means sisterhood and friendship, and it has grown to consist also the things we do with our band and distro. Hanna: Yes. We also try to support other girls to do what they want and to be a channel to find d.i.y.-stuff made by grrls. who are in this Unity? Alma: At the beginning it was only me and Pörri and some like-minded friends. But now it´s us in Girl Germs and anyone who wants to co-operate with us. It´s not like a club where you can join. It´s a sisterhood that encourages girls to do something like write a zine, play in a band, organize a gig.. why you made unity like this? Hanna: This is our way to do things. If I could imagine something different, i'd see more girl punks making good music and working together. is this important to you to encourage finland girls to feminism? Hanna: Yes. When gender equality comes to guestion, they talk only about economics. Finnish women can choose same careers than men, thought they don't get as well payed for same jobs. Ok, that's a problem, but if that's the only problem something's really wrong! Isn't personal lives more important than work and money?! They want to forget all the rapes and domestic violence in which woman is the victim. And how much there's woman-ways to act - i mean gender roles and attitudes. It's not easy for feminine men neather etc etc. I'd rather encourage finnish girls to know their own justification and refuse be a guiet victim of this "men's world"'s rules. is there a lot of feminists in finland? Alma: So it´s said Finland is an equal country ´cos we got woman suffrage as a second country in the world etc, but there´s still of course a lot to do. There´s a few feminist groups here in Finland and they do their thing which is great. And then there´s a punch of (young) anarchafeminists, mostly in the anarchism- and punkscene who write zines and play in bands, and I guess we are one of them. Hanna: Widespread opinion seems to be there's everything alright and there's no need for feminism. Most of women seem to be happy with their roles and this "almost-economic-equality" is enough for them or their "feminism" concerns just that. what is ur part in finland feminism scene? Hanna: Marginal. We're marginal part of punk-scene, which itself is a small underground-culture. Our part is not more or less that we do what we want with our lives. what are the future plans with this Unity? Hanna: "Keep on livin". Alma: To stay together strong. |
